This section is the longest in the book, and covers the different possible roles or situations for women in society: married woman, mother, socialite, prostitute or hetaera, or old woman. Across all of these chapters, de Beauvoir analyzes how these different roles affect the women who have to subscribe to them. She considers how these roles differ across history and culture, how different types of women adapt to these situations, and the ways in which each role is shaped by men and detrimental to women.
